"Post-surgery, people keep asking me if I got more sleep. Nope, just a good surgeon!"

Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery) – Restore a Refreshed, Youth

Blepharoplasty, also known as eyelid surgery, is a cosmetic procedure that enhances the appearance of the upper and/or lower eyelids. As we age, the skin around the eyes loses elasticity, causing droopy eyelids, under-eye bags, and a tired look. Blepharoplasty corrects this by removing excess skin, tightening muscles, and repositioning or removing fat deposits.

The procedure can be done on the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both. Upper eyelid surgery helps improve vision and reduce a hooded appearance, while lower eyelid blepharoplasty smooths puffiness and loose skin for a youthful contour.

Blepharoplasty is typically an outpatient procedure performed under local or general anesthesia, with minimal downtime. Most patients see results within a few weeks, and scars are usually hidden in natural creases.

In addition to cosmetic improvements, this surgery can also enhance peripheral vision in cases where sagging skin obstructs sight.

Whether for aesthetic reasons or functional correction, blepharoplasty is a safe, effective way to restore a refreshed, youthful look and boost self-confidence.

Risks and Possible Complications of Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty is generally a safe surgical procedure, but like any surgery, it carries some risks. While complications are rare, it’s important to be aware of potential issues before deciding to undergo the procedure. The main risks include:

  • Bleeding

  • Infection

  • Dry eyes

  • Abnormal discoloration of the eyelids

  • Scarring

  • Abnormal folding of eyelid skin (either folding inward or outward)

  • Inability to fully close the eyes

  • Pulled-down lower eyelid or lash line

Most patients are satisfied with their results, but understanding these risks helps ensure informed decision-making.

The surgeon makes an incision below the lower lash line or inside the eyelid, removes or redistributes excess skin and fat.

Upper eyelid surgery usually takes 45 minutes to 1 hour. Doing both upper and lower eyelids may take up to 2 hours depending on the complexity.

Preparation may include medical evaluation, quitting smoking, adjusting medications, and stopping blood thinners or anti-inflammatory drugs to reduce bleeding risks.

Expect swelling and bruising, stitches in the upper lids for about a week, and some activity restrictions for several days. Most people feel comfortable going out in 10-14 days.

Blepharoplasty is one of the least painful cosmetic surgeries. You may have mild discomfort on the surgery day but generally recover quickly.

While initial recovery takes about 10-14 days, complete healing may take a few months.

Upper eyelid surgery results can last 5-7 years or even a lifetime, while lower eyelid surgery usually only needs to be done once.

Risks include bleeding, infection, dry eyes, scarring, abnormal eyelid folding, inability to fully close eyes, pulled-down lower eyelid, and very rarely, vision loss.
